Chapter Fourteen
Rosalie, ever the practical one, said, âWill this Sir Malcolm expect to stay here? He and his lackeys?â
âI have no idea,â I told her. âI hope not.â
âIâd better have a couple of rooms prepared, just in case.â
âMaybe they could stay in the old wing,â Adam suggested. âIt would suit Sir Malcolm perfectly.â
âHeâs a little feudal?â Thorpe asked.
âMore than a little. Sorry. Iâm uncomfortable, and itâs making me grumpy,â Adam replied.
âDo you feel up to dressing for dinner?â Rosalie asked.
âYes. Yes. Iâll be fine,â Adam told her, giving her a weak smile.
I hoped he would be. Adam was doing more and resting better than heâd been able to do in London, but his pain and ill temper didnât seem to be diminishing.
âThank you for your good advice. I spoke to Rosalie, and weâre in accord. As soon as she can be released, sheâll be coming home,â Thorpe told us, taking his wifeâs hand.
âAnd working just as hard for victory as I have at Bletchley,â Rosalie said to me.
Rosalie and Thorpe left to dress, and we did the same. If anything, the pain lines beginning to etch into Adamâs face made him even more handsome in his evening wear.
I put on my shimmery gray evening gown with a shawl so I wouldnât freeze in the dining room or anywhere else we might end up after dinner.
Adam went down in the lift with Thorpe and I walked down the stairs with Rosalie. âWe rang the dressing gong just as soon as the hunters arrived back, but we wonât have to wait on them hunting tomorrow, thank goodness.â
âHow much longer are they going to be hunting?â I asked, hoping theyâd leave soon.
âWho knows? The viscount doesnât tell me anything.â
âBut heâs a guest in your home.â The words came out before I could stop them, I was so surprised. Then I realized I shouldnât have been.
âThe viscount makes himself at home wherever.â
âWhen would you like us to leave?â
âOh, Livvy. I want you to stay as long as this is doing Adam some good and Thorpe is enjoying having both of you around. You two are no trouble. And,â she added quietly, âI want you to sort out our double murder.â
âEspecially Northcottâs?â
Rosalie stopped on the stairs and looked at me.
âIâm still wondering why Valerie Northcott gave you sympathy when her husband was killed. Especially since she seems very friendly with her solicitor. Does she know?â
Rosalie gave me a steely gaze and then whispered, âLater.â
I heard someone nearby and continued down the stairs. âI still think the killer is one of your guests, but Iâm no farther forward than I was a day ago. Maybe Sir Malcolm will bring some light to the problem.â
âI hope someone or something does. Thorpe is growing more anxious.â
The dinner gong rang.
âAbout what specifically?â I asked.
âMe going away from here for days at a time managing our holdings. Silverthornâs declining health. Two people being murdered in our house while he slept. So, you see, Livvy, you have to solve the murders. Thorpe needs you to.
